The Journey

Trip OverviewGondogoro La Trek | Local Guide

Welcome to the heart of the Karakoram, where the mountains speak in silence and every valley tells a story. I have guided countless adventurers through these lands, and yet every trek to K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La feels like a new journey, full of discovery and wonder. This 21-day expedition is not just a trek; it is a passage into some of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes on Earth, a place where the sky meets towering peaks, glaciers stretch like rivers of ice, and local culture thrives untouched by time.
The journey begins in Islamabad, the bustling capital of Pakistan, where the contrast between city life and the wilderness you are about to enter is immediately striking. From here, we take a domestic flight to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. As we descend into the valley, the river Indus glistens below, surrounded by towering mountains with snow-capped peaks shimmering in the sunlight. Skardu itself is a town steeped in history and Balti culture, a place where you can see centuries-old forts and the hospitality of the local people before venturing into the wilderness.
From Skardu, the adventure truly begins. A thrilling jeep safari along rugged tracks takes us to Askole, the last village before the mighty Baltoro Glacier. The journey is a feast for the eyes: rushing turquoise rivers, verdant meadows dotted with wildflowers, and small Balti villages clinging to mountain slopes. Askole is more than a trailhead—it is a place of connection with the local people, who have lived in harmony with these mountains for generations. Leaving the jeeps behind, we step onto the trail and begin the trek that will take us past Jhula, Paiju, and Khoburtse. Each day offers new views of jagged peaks, glacial streams, and the ever-present humbling grandeur of the Karakoram range.
Paiju is our first major resting point, where trekkers can acclimatize and feel the immense scale of the mountains around them. The pace is slow here, allowing our bodies to adjust to the thin air, but the scenery is alive with the crisp glacial winds and the distant sound of cascading ice. From Khoburtse to Urdukas and onwards to Goro II, the trek follows the Baltoro Glacier, one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. Walking beside this icy river of ice, you begin to understand why this valley has been revered by explorers, mountaineers, and locals alike. Each camp is more remote than the last, and each night under the clear, star-studded sky brings a profound sense of connection with the mountains.
The highlight of our journey is, of course, K2 Base Camp. Standing at the foot of the world’s second-highest peak, you can feel the power and majesty of the mountains like nowhere else. From here, the peaks of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I–IV, and Masherbrum rise above the horizon, and the glaciers around you glitter in the sun. We spend a day here to rest and explore, absorbing the atmosphere and understanding the courage of the climbers who attempt these summits. It is a place of reverence, awe, and reflection.
The crossing of Gondogoro La Pass is an unforgettable adventure. This high mountain pass connects the Baltoro Glacier with the Hushe Valley and requires careful navigation, sometimes using fixed ropes to traverse icy sections. As you ascend, the surrounding peaks grow ever taller, and when you finally reach the summit of the pass, the panorama is breathtaking. From this vantage, you can see the full majesty of the Karakoram, with glaciers flowing down from giant summits, rivers cutting through deep valleys, and the village of Hushe far below. Descending into Hushe, trekkers are greeted by a combination of relief, triumph, and the gentle warmth of village life in the remote Balti communities.
The return journey takes us back to Skardu, with a rest day to recover and enjoy the comforts of civilization, before flying back to Islamabad. Along the way, trekkers have the opportunity to reflect on the journey, share stories with fellow adventurers, and appreciate the profound contrast between the mountains and the cities below.
This trek is not just about physical achievement; it is about connection—to the mountains, to the glaciers, to the local people, and to oneself. It is about experiencing the silence of the high peaks, the rush of icy streams, the laughter and hospitality of Balti families, and the overwhelming sense of scale and beauty that only the Karakoram can provide. Whether you are here for adventure, photography, culture, or personal challenge, the K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek is a journey that will leave an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
