Broad Peak (8,047 meters), the 12th highest mountain in the world, stands proudly next to K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks in the Baltoro region of the Karakoram range, Pakistan. This expedition is organized by K2 Expedition & Trekking, a local tour operator that has been managing successful mountaineering journeys in the Karakoram since 2012.

Expedition Highlights

  • Broad Peak Expedition: Experience the grandeur of the Karakoram.
  • Scenic flight to Skardu: Enjoy breathtaking views of the towering peaks.
  • Discover Baltistan: Explore the rich culture of this ancient Himalayan kingdom.
  • Trek through iconic landscapes: Pass by the Trango Towers, Cathedral, and Lobsang Spire.
  • Spectacular views from Concordia: See Gasherbrum, K2, and Broad Peak up close.
  • Adventure on the Baltoro Glacier: Experience one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions.
  • Summit one of the easiest 8000m peaks: Broad Peak is known for being relatively accessible among the 8000m peaks.
Expedition Overview

The Broad Peak Expedition is a challenging yet rewarding adventure. Located at the heart of the Karakoram range, Broad Peak, known locally as “Falchan Kangri,” offers mountaineers a chance to climb one of the world’s top 8000m peaks. The expedition is physically and mentally demanding, requiring high-level climbing and mountaineering skills. Prior experience on 6,800-meter peaks is recommended for those aiming to summit.

Broad Peak’s name comes from its vast, wide summit ridge. Standing alongside K2, it dominates the landscape of the Baltoro Glacier. With over a decade of local expertise, K2 Expedition & Trekking ensures a well-supported and safe journey, offering both full-board logistics and customized plans to suit climbers’ experience levels, available time, and weather conditions.

Journey to Broad Peak

The expedition begins at Islamabad International Airport, where a representative from K2 Expedition & Trekking will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. After an initial briefing, you will take a spectacular 45-minute flight to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram. Here, you will have the chance to glimpse Nanga Parbat, K2, and other stunning peaks.

Skardu, the capital of Baltistan, is a hub for trekkers and climbers, where you can complete any final preparations before setting off. From Skardu, you will journey by jeep along the Indus, Shigar, and Braldu rivers to reach Askole, the last village before entering the wilderness of the Karakoram.

Trekking to Broad Peak Base Camp

The adventure begins with a trek from Askole, passing through Braldu Gorge and along the Baltoro Glacier, one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. The journey will take you through some of the most stunning and dramatic mountain landscapes, leading to Concordia, often called the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods,” where you’ll get the first views of Broad Peak.

Climbing Broad Peak

Your expedition team, including mountain guides, chefs, and support staff, will remain at Base Camp for the entire duration of the climb. The route typically involves setting up multiple camps:

  • Camp I (6,000m): Reached by climbing a rock gully.
  • Camp II (6,400m): Situated on a large snow face.
  • Camp III (7,400m): The final camp before making the summit attempt.

The ascent, though not extremely steep, is challenging due to its remoteness and altitude. After reaching the summit, the return follows the same path back to Islamabad, where the expedition concludes.

Why Choose K2 Expedition & Trekking?

K2 Expedition & Trekking is a trusted name, known for its local expertise and deep-rooted connections within the Baltistan region. Since 2012, we have been hosting mountaineering expeditions and treks, ensuring a safe, authentic, and culturally enriching experience for adventurers from around the world.

Broad Peak’s Climbing History

The first successful ascent of Broad Peak was made on June 9, 1957, by an Austrian team led by Marcus Schmuck. The climbers—Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl—achieved the summit without supplemental oxygen or the aid of high-altitude porters, marking a significant achievement in mountaineering history.

Several notable climbs have occurred on Broad Peak, including:

  • 1987/88 Winter Expedition: Led by Andrzej Zawada, a Polish team attempted Broad Peak during their winter expedition to K2. Though the main summit was not reached, the team did succeed in summiting the Fore Peak.
  • 2005 New Route: Denis Urubko and Serguey Samoilov pioneered a new route on the Southwest Face in alpine style.
  • 2008 West Face Climb: Valery Babanov and Victor Afanasiev ascended via a central pillar route, demonstrating the mountain’s continued allure for climbers seeking new challenges.

Whether this is your first 8000m peak or another addition to your mountaineering portfolio, Broad Peak offers a unique blend of beauty, challenge, and cultural immersion. With over 12 years of local experience, K2 Expedition & Trekking ensures your expedition is handled with the utmost professionalism, safety, and respect for the environment and local communities.

Climbing a Mountain in Pakistan

Pakistan, spanning about 880,000 square kilometers, is a land of contrasts—stretching from the Arabian Sea to the towering peaks of the Karakoram and Himalayas in Gilgit Baltistan. This region, where the Karakoram, Hindukush, and Himalayas converge, is home to five of the world’s highest peaks: K2 (8,611m), Nanga Parbat (8,126m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), Broad Peak (8,047m), and Gasherbrum II (8,035m). Gilgit Baltistan also boasts the largest glaciers outside the polar regions, offering unparalleled opportunities for mountain climbing.

Whether you’re looking to climb a peak for the first time or are a seasoned mountaineer, Pakistan provides limitless options. Our team has been organizing expeditions in the Karakoram for over 40 years and can help plan your Broad Peak climb. Simply let us know your preferred peak and season, and we’ll handle the rest.
